Carbon Neutrality Initiatives by CHOFU Group

Carbon Neutrality Initiatives

In recent years, the increase in extreme weather events, driven by global warming, has become a pressing global issue. This has prompted the Japanese Government and business community to intensify efforts towards achieving a decarbonized society.
Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from households has become a critical focus, particularly the reduction of energy consumption for water heating and air conditioning, which constitutes a significant portion of energy use in residential buildings.

In response to this challenge, the CHOFU Group has identified the reduction of GHG emissions associated with business activities and product usage as one of our key management priorities. In alignment with the Japanese Government's policy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, we have set a target to reduce our own GHG emissions (Scope 1+2) from our business activities by 46% by 2030, compared to 2013 levels. Furthermore, we are committed to contributing to the realization of a decarbonized society, with the goal of achieving virtually zero GHG emissions by 2050.

Scope 1: Greenhouse gas emissions that are directly produced by a company's activities through activities such as through fuel combustion.

Scope 2: Greenhouse gas emissions that are generated indirectly from the consumption of electricity and other services supplied by other companies.

Scope 3: Greenhouse gas emissions produced during the processes of procurement, manufacturing, sales, use and disposal.

Reduction targets for GHG emissions (Scope 1+2) associated with our own business activities. GHG emissions are calculated in accordance with the GHG Protocol standards, which are internationally recognized guidelines for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions.

Long-Term Environmental Strategy (Scope 1 + 2)

To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, we have designated the period leading up to 2030 as the 'low-carbon phase' and will work towards creating a low-carbon society through initiatives such as energy-saving measures, the introduction of high-efficiency equipment and the procurement of green electricity.

Additionally, we have designated the period from 2030 to 2050 as the 'decarbonization phase'. during this phase, in addition to the initiatives outlined above, we aim to reduce GHG emissions to virtually zero by 2050 through in-house consumption of renewable energy and the introduction of equipment and product development utilizing hydrogen, synthetic fuels and biomass fuels.

Initiatives to Reduce GHG Emissions (Scope 3) During Product Use

・Energy-saving Performance Promotion for Customers

We promote the energy-saving performance of our products by displaying the CO2 emission reduction amount and reduction ratio (compared to conventional products) on our website and in our product catalogues, as well as showing the amount of CO2 emissions during equipment use on remote controls.

We are also expanding sales of high-performance environmental products, such as Eco-Feel, Eco-Jozu and Eco-Cute.

- Eco-Feel: High-efficiency oil-based water heaters with advanced condensing technology and heat recovery systems that reuse exhaust heat, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.

- Eco-Jozu: High-efficiency gas-based water heaters equipped with condensing technology and heat recovery systems, designed to optimize energy use by reusing exhaust heat.

- Eco-Cute: Eco-friendly heat pump water heaters using natural CO2 refrigerant for superior energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

・ Dialogue with the Local Community

We engage with local communities through various events, providing corporate briefings, offering internships and organizing factory tours for educational institutions. These activities allow us to communicate our efforts regarding climate change initiatives and the promotion of high-efficiency products.

・ Providing New Products and Services

We are introducing products that utilize renewable energy sources, such as solar heat and geothermal energy, to the market.

As the only company handling all types of heat sources, including oil, gas and electricity, we contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions across society by promoting the widespread adoption of high-efficiency water heaters and heat pump systems for whole-house air conditioning.

・ Manufacturing Decarbonized Energy
We are producing decarbonized energy through the development of a large-scale solar power generation system with a total capacity of up to 12.6 megawatts, installed on the rooftops of our headquarters and Utsunomiya factory buildings.
In addition, biomass energy, sourced from renewable resources such as plants, is considered a crucial element in achieving carbon neutrality.
To advance this goal, our company has invested in Chofu Biopower LLC, which is promoting the construction of the "Chofu Biomass Power Plant" on our premises, scheduled to begin operation in 2025.

Governance

To accelerate our efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality (hereafter "CN") by 2050, we have established a CN Promotion Team.
The CN Promotion Team analyses our current status in relation to CN, identifies challenges and evaluates strategies for implementation based on these insights.
Composed of representatives from each department, the team promotes the CN strategy through cross-departmental collaboration with operational teams.
The CN Promotion Team has the responsibility and authority to guide improvements in environmental measures across departments. The progress of deliberations and the implementation of various measures are regularly reported to the Board of Directors, as needed, through the Management Meetings.
Business risks and opportunities related to climate change are reviewed by the Board of Directors and integrated into the company's overall strategy.
